Let the chaos begin!!
We have had a busy first week adjusting to being a family of 5 and being sleep deprived – luckily we’ve had lots of help from both sets of grandparents. Oma and Opa took care of Isaac while Lindy and Jon hung out in the hospital during a long uncomfortable induction process. Once the epidural kicked in, things got much better š and those babies basically popped out! Overall it was an extremely different experience than the birth of Isaac. Due to the twin factor, Lindy had to deliver in an operating room just in case of an emergency C-section, which also involved 10 doctors/nurses standing at the ready – and staring. Instead of being home a few hours after a no-drug birth, we had to stay a couple of difficult nights in the hospital during which the staff were constantly interrupting our attempts to sleep with more poking and prodding. There was a threat to have to stay a little bit longer because Lindy was having trouble breathing when moving around – but it seems to have just been anxiety from the uncomfortable hospital environment. Luckily, we were discharged on Saturday afternoon, and Grandma was able to come help Lindy in the hospital on Saturday morning so that Jon could take Isaac to his skating lesson. Once back at home, Lindy was much more comfortable – although still unable to go up and down stairs so we’ve camped out in the living room.
Isaac came to the hospital to meet his new siblings and was very excited to see Daddy and meet his little sister and brother. He’s been very helpful, offering to get things for us and carry things to the kitchen. He gives the babies lots of hugs and kisses. “Look at their cute little fingers!” There are still many moments when he doesn’t like having to share his parents but overall it is going well (he’s still an almost-3-yr-old). Every morning he asks Lindy “can you run now??” but that will take some more time yet.
Thank you to Dave for driving Lindy to all her appointments this January, to Barb for wonderful food and baby holding, to Dad and Lynn for taking care of Isaac and generally being here to help with everything! Thank you to everyone for the food, little gifts, offers to help and well wishes. Thanks Greg for offering to come help in the middle of the night! Thanks to Sam for offering to take Isaac to his next skating lesson. Thanks to nurse Shelley for changing diapers and feeding babies on her days off. And a super special thank you to Khadija, our midwife, who has been a wealth of knowledge, experience, and extremely supportive through the whole thing! Even the nurses kept saying, “it’s a good thing Khadija’s here!” when they found themselves understaffed or unexpectedly busy.
