A whole lot of fall

The Perth Fair was cancelled this year, but we still managed to finish off the summer with a fair – hitting the Carp Fair with friends, which also involved a ride on a school bus shuttle (!!). The kids loved the animals, rides and even a magic show! We were impressed that Isaac was willing to go on the adult rides (to Lindy’s excitement to finally have a thrill seeking partner as Jon was happy to turn that role over to Isaac).

We celebrated the usual birthdays this fall, however we made a special birthday song video for Super Oma who turned 100 this year! Opa was able to get a couple visits in with Super Oma, but with no large gatherings happening, we didn’t feel we could make the trip down during Jon’s busy season at work. The kids are always up for a reason to have cake, and enjoy eating it in honour of whoever’s birthday it may be.

The kids must be growing as we’ve received 4 emails so far this school year from Isaac’s teachers letting us know he needs more food in his lunch, and Cadence and Asher keep telling us that their tummies need more food…they are definitely getting bigger, and entering a new stage, where they pretend play together. They like to chase each other around, growling like tigers.

Cadence and Asher have picked up the interest in BMX biking, trail riding, and going to the skate park. Isaac got a two wheeled scooter and loves practising jumps and tricks. Isaac has transferred his love for biking to You Tube, watching videos of extreme mountain biking and skateboarding. He is extremely into science experiments, and has also discovered Art on Kids Hub and watches video after video learning how to draw. His pictures have drastically improved, and his enthusiasm for everything art has increased. Cadence is often right there beside him. She’s rediscovered her dolls, and now carries them around with her, imitating her life through them. Asher has been getting more physical and loves rough housing with Isaac.

We had lovely Thanksgiving dinners with both sides of the family, with cousins and beautiful weather, making it feel close to normal. We sneaked in a family photo too. I’ve always wondered if it would be worth splurging on professional photos – but why do that when we can get the perfect candid shots with fingers up the nose and all…!

Halloween was a never ending event around here, including trips to the pumpkin patch, Saunders Farm, and afternoon Trick or Treating with the neighbour friends. Isaac proudly carved his own pumpkin this year. The kids loved decorating, and wish we had more and better decorations. The house was filled with Halloween art. Luckily Isaac was willing to share his candy three ways – we can’t imagine how much candy there will be when all three kids are going door to door!

Soccer seems to come naturally to Isaac. He started lessons this fall and will continue this winter, since he really took to it. The hour lesson on Saturdays weren’t enough to satisfy his passion, and we spent many afternoons in the rain kicking a ball around the backyard or park afterwards. His persistence will eventually be a good quality…right? We thought there would a similar passion in gymnastics, however Isaac dropped out of his little ninja lessons because they wouldn’t let him jump from high enough or climb up a certain wall. Luckily there is a gymnastics drop in suitable for all three kids that seems to fulfil the jumping needs. (Cute side note – Asher calls the trampoline a “bounceline”.) It is nice that Cadence and Asher enjoy it just as much, considering the need for parent accompaniment at their age means we haven’t been able to put them in any activities. We did discover one benefit to being a family of five – the Tim bits can be evenly distributed! (10 pack, 20 pack etc).

Everyone loved our trip to Parc Omega, which was more elaborate than expected. The animals were huge and close up, and loved the carrots we fed them. It was such a hit, and it’s nice to know that we didn’t see it all so there will be something new left for the next visit.

Lindy and Jon have continued their night out a week, each getting away from the daily routine once in a while, even if for Jon it means a long day at work. Jon’s work has been extra busy as the company grows but is struggling to keep up due to the world’s supply chain shortages etc. Lindy’s getting back in touch with some friends and running the necessary errands just to keep the house running in daily life. Fortunately, we’ve also had a few date nights, gone go-karting and done an escape room at the Diefenbunker.

Emotions are still running high in our house. Isaac’s anxiety pops up randomly and in new hard to understand situations. Lindy is having a tough time accepting life’s reality as another close friend is going through cancer treatments. The kids come home from daycare in quite the state some days, and the house is full of tears over the smallest things – but they are mountains when mixed with the exhaustion of being toddlers, or stressed from the work day.

We’ve jumped right into the holiday season, forgoing the December rule for decorating since the kids are so keen to make everything Christmas around here. It’s a good distraction and puts the emphasis back onto the happy family times.
