And we thought this holiday would be closer to normal…

December went a little differently than planned. Just when we thought this Christmas was going to feel almost normal again, things started shutting down. Isaac was a close contact for covid from someone on his school bus and had to miss his weekend activities of soccer and skating, but he luckily didn’t mind taking the covid tests this time. Soccer closed down a week early before the holidays and announced it wouldn’t start up again until February. Then the news broke that gatherings would be limited over the holidays….another lockdown.

Lindy and Jon did sneak in one night out together to celebrate Jon’s birthday – drinks in a pub for the last time for awhile…it was a fun night with a live band, even though there was no dancing allowed!

The kids were sent home from school for the holidays with all their belongings and the “just in case” on-line learning package, even though the government officials refused to admit that school wouldn’t be going back in January. Thankfully, Isaac’s holiday daycamp at the RA still ran the week before Christmas. He loved it, and was basically running around all day long playing soccer and other sports. He was exhausted in the evenings, but happy.

Unfortunately, our Christmas plans went from a large family gathering to a quiet Christmas day. While it was disappointing not to see Jon’s family that we haven’t celebrated with in a couple years, we did have a very pleasant Christmas day with Grandma and Papa. We missed seeing the cousins on Lindy’s side of the family, but we did get to do our holiday sleepover at Oma and Opa’s house, albeit a little later than planned. Most of our holiday was spent in isolation after a couple close contacts with covid and some runny noses. We did get out skating and tobogganing. Isaac loves skating and has really improved. Cadence was excited to try, but Asher took more convincing. We quickly learned what props were needed for skating to last more than a few minutes, with sleds, shovels, and hockey sticks! Turns out that tobogganing is our best bet for a fun family outing.

This Christmas definitely had the excitement and anticipation for Santa coming. Cadence and Asher loved listening to Christmas carols and singing Jingle Bells. The new toys helped pass the days in isolation too. So did the Disney channel – now that the kids will watch a movie for a much needed parental break once in awhile. They loved looking at Christmas lights (must run in the family) – so they loved going to see the Magic of Lights. Driving anywhere in the dark, we would hear “look, more lights” at almost every house we went by! LOL.

We also brought the kids’ bikes and scooters inside, and built a small ramp for them to ride off of in the basement. Around and around they go. Asher and Cadence have really taken to running laps around our main floor circle as well, often putting chairs in their way as an obstacle to climb and jump off. Non stop activity here, with the kids chasing each other like tigers or cheetahs, or wrestling with daddy. Even with all the new toys, tickle fights are still the favourite!

At the end of the break, we did get out once, to go bowling! The kids loved it, and really got the hang of it. The arcade games were a hit too. Though it wasn’t the holiday that we had hoped for, it was still very relaxed with many PJ days and slower mornings. Lots and lots of family time!
