Covid Twos and Valentines

We have officially survived the first two years with twins 🙂 Everyone always told us that was the hardest part – but they might just say that to new parents…we expect there are definitely more challenges to come!

While the pandemic restrictions limited our gathering, we still enjoyed a mini covid-birthday celebration for Cadence and Asher with each set of grandparents, which made it feel like an extra special occasion during this lockdown. It took a couple days for Cadence and Asher to catch on, but they continued singing happy birthday to themselves until Valentines’ Day! They absolutely love the digital frame full of pictures from Grandma and Papa, and the Goldilocks and Three bear puppets from Oma and Opa. They don’t know it yet – but their birthday toddler beds are coming soon too! (As soon as Lindy can get over the fear of uncaged kiddos). Isaac also loved his big brothers gifts.

Cadence and Asher are talking up a storm now, though it is still hard to understand them. Cadence narrates what she’s doing most of the time, and Asher keeps us posted on what’s going on. Cadence is still interested in potty training, but they can’t focus on it at daycare because they share a bathroom and can’t interact with the other classes. They can get themselves ready to go outside now. Their morning routine has started to include “building ducky houses” around their toy animals out of the magnets. They love scooting around the basement on their coaster bikes and ride on toys, but most of all love jumping off the furniture!

Cadence is very particular about her clothing, while Asher could care less. Isaac is on a 4 outfit rotation, between Batman and Puma clothing. He insists on wearing batman underwear and socks everyday so luckily we have lots of those!

With the colder weather, we’ve had to spend more time inside, and we go through a million indoor activities in a morning. Everything only lasts 5 minutes! We have bundled up and done lots of walks, tobogganing and skating at the local park, but they are short visits. At least there are some really good snow mountains in our neighbourhood!

Isaac has been happy back at school again, and this third lockdown has seemed more manageable even without our usual visits from Oma and Opa. Thank goodness for daycare! Isaac has a new bunk bed which has dramatically improved our bedtime routine, as well as given him a new desk space in his room. He’s been really enjoying reading chapter books, and loves following the instructions in Lego kits. He is always asking to do science experiments, and make crystals or gems. Isaac wrote out all the names for his Valentines, and is constantly asking how to spell things and wants to learn to read. He has moments of independence where he’ll make breakfast for the kids, or play in the backyard alone. We are just now starting to see a glimpse of Isaac leading the kids in a make believe game – or asking them to go play in the basement together.

Just when we think the kids have come through Covid okay so far – Isaac asked Lindy if the medication she takes in the morning is for “smoothing out her emotions so she doesn’t yell when she’s frustrated”…sigh, not quite, but maybe we should get some of those! There have been some lonely moments this past month, as socializing has had to be completely halted. We are missing our families and friends. But with the stricter rules lifting again, we are looking forward to gymnastics to start up next weekend! Perhaps that will tide us over until spring…
