is this year over yet? november 2020

This month started out pretty good, with some warm weather and a few weeks of easy going children! We made a spontaneous trip to Kingston one beautiful Sunday, to visit Zavier who is away at college. We had a fun visit at Lake Ontario Park. Zavier didn’t seem to mind that it meant standing around the play ground watching the kids spin themselves dizzy! We even managed our first family dinner at Swiss Chalet before the car ride home.

Lindy got into a much needed routine of running every morning with a neighbour, meeting at the school bus stop and going from there. The snow and colder weather now is bitter sweet, as it is exciting for the kids but might soon ruin our great routine.

Staying around home was working for awhile on Saturday mornings when Jon went to work, and took a bit of stress out of always trying to have an outdoor playdate set up for the kids. But we seem to have shifted into the terrible twos all of a sudden, and Isaac piggy backs (or starts) the chaos by getting upset with all the crying. Flashing back to the beginning of covid, and getting pulled in different directions with all the competing needs and ending up with three screaming children has taken its toll on Lindy. While Jon has been working super hard to get as many houses equipped with awesome holiday lighting before Christmas – he’s now had to give up working Saturdays to keep Lindy from going crazy.

Lindy’s work is up in the air again – meaning she might get moved to a new unit again in the new year. The change will almost definitely mean a longer commute on the days that Lindy has to go into the office, which has become more frequent lately. The daily tasks have been overwhelming and covid has just become the excuse to work from home in order to help Lindy manage everyday life things. As the pressure increases to start going back into the office more frequently – new routines will have to be figured out to keep functioning around here.

We do have some little helpers at home though, with Cadence always taking care of everyone and making sure they each have a bowl or milk cup, and both Asher and Cadence bring everyone their boots and hats etc. It has also been helpful that Isaac can get himself ready in the morning, and they all enjoy picking out their clothes (although it is still sometimes a struggle to settle on one outfit).

We’ve continued our evening walks, and Cadence is always wanting to hold a hand – where Asher absolutely refuses. Asher, however, insists on being held first thing in the morning and often at dinner time during the difficult meal prep time. Then he happily sits on his own to eat, where Cadence always ends up on Lindy’s lap. At least they’ve found their balance and there is usually only one child on Lindy now.

Isaac is obviously enjoying school, and comes home every day to say that he’s had the best day ever! When asked what made it so great, his response is often “because everyone was nice to me”. The play structure that Jon built in the basement is paying off now as Isaac will do the monkey bars about 50 times a day! The kids have finally reached a point where they can go to the basement by themselves for a few minutes while Lindy and Jon finish eating or making dinner.

Cadence and Asher’s words have been exploding lately, though still their own version of everything. There were very excited for a trip to the Experimental Farm to see the “anmals” and of course the highlight was when “moo poop!”

Everyone has been sleeping well lately, and in their own beds. As soon as we had created a bed beside ours for Isaac to use for the middle of the night wake ups – he has stopped coming into our room at night. Now he’s sleeping until we go to get the chatty twins in the morning, and is often upset to be woken up early!!! (Insert eye roll here – after years of Isaac being the early riser). We are now often in bed until almost 630am! But it will be a short lived phase for sure – since Asher climbed out of his crib the other day…

Our month had a few tough yet entertaining moments as well. We did our first pandemic family swim – fun for the kids but a bit stressful for us parents, as there are a lot of rules now at indoor facilities that don’t encourage frequent excursions. With the terrible twos setting in – Cadence has been getting so worked up when she’s upset that she throws up everywhere, all because she wanted to wear the PJs Asher already had on or wanting to change her diaper 15 times before nap…She also went through a week long phase of getting progressively more naked in her crib in the morning until one day we found her completely naked and having peed in the crib. And Asher, well Asher was caught very confidently peeing down the heat register while waiting to get into the bath one night. All fun and games over here. One success came of it though, when Cadence took herself unsupervised to the potty and got undressed, sat and peed all by herself. Perhaps we’ll get somewhere with the potty training soon.

Now on to December, with two weeks of holidays at home with the kids! We are thankful that everyone is healthy and well and look forward to seeing all our family in some way over the holidays. Hopefully there will be snow to play in – for both kids and parents!
