The twins are 6 months old today!
We had a great time at the cottage for our two week holiday. While there were still ups and downs, we finally felt like we could manage on our own. We had lots of family and friends drop in to keep us company and help either entertain Isaac or hold babies. It was really nice to feel like we could socialize without it always being about people helping us…it felt almost normal again! It did take a couple days for us to adjust to being at the cottage, but once we had our routines figured out, it all went smoothly. A few of the upgrades to the cottage helped us manage better, like having air conditioners in the bedrooms.
The water was still fresh at the beginning of our stay, but warmed up to bath water by the end. Isaac spent a good portion of each day in the water, often starting with a 7am swim. Cadence and Asher tested the water but it was still too cold for their liking for more than a minute, so they mostly just hung out on the beach. Although we were on holidays, having 3 kids means still having to do the everyday things like laundry and bottle prep etc, so Lindy spent more time inside than the usual cottage holiday – but at least with a better view than at home 🙂
In order to avoid complete meltdowns everyday – we let Isaac skip naps for our holidays, which resulted in some earlier bedtimes and more flexibility to enjoy the afternoons with our company. For the most part, that worked out really well, and considering how much energy he exerted in a day – there were only a few tired tantrums. We did a couple strategic car rides, and there were a couple sneak attack naps when the day just caught up with him. Now back at home, he is still weaning off naps at daycare, but we are now trying to adjust to full days of activity on the weekends. We’re back to BBQs with neighbours and friends, and visits to the beach, park or splash pad. It is tricky because he gets emotionally exhausted but doesn’t want to sleep. There are a few things that you can’t force a kid to do – eat, poop and sleep!
It also took a little while to adjust to coming home, with Isaac used to full time attention and things to do and the babies seemingly back to newborn sleep habits as well as Isaac waking often in the night again. We are struggling with exhaustion again but hopefully this is just another phase. We had done some sleep training at the cottage which surprised us with how quickly it worked – however they are teething now and these little slobber monkeys might be waking more because of that. Cadence sometimes sucks Lindy’s arm so hard that she gives her hickies!
The babies are sitting up on their own and moving around. Asher can cover some ground now, although very slowly and in an unconventional way. He is also starting to walk when holding onto someone’s hands, instinctively putting one foot in front of the other. We’ve started giving them some food too, and they sit with us at the table in their highchairs. They both chatter-scream quite a bit now, and Jon and Lindy are having a hard time with the noise of three shouting kids at dinnertime.
Lindy and Jon are continuously grateful for the grandparents’ help in the evenings, allowing us each to get out sailing one night a week. It is increasingly obvious how impossible it would be without them! We’re now looking at each getting a weekend away in the fall, and setting up our support for those much anticipated few days.
